Morgan & Morgan partner in the Governing Board of the University for Peace

The Secretary General of the Organization of the United Nations (UN), Ban Ki-moon, has invited Dr. Aristides Royo, former President of the Republic of Panama, to become a member of the Governing Board of the University for Peace (UPEACE). UPEACE is an academic institution under the UN and is the only institute of this organization authorized to grant master’s degrees and doctorates.  http://www.upeace.org/espanol/acerca/.  Dr. Royo, will be the keynote speaker at the graduation ceremony of the 2012-2013 class, the 30th of May at UPEACE headquarters in Costa Rica. At the ceremony, 151 students from 44 countries and five continents will receive their Masters’ degree. The specialties of the Masters revolve around the most important issues in Human Governance, Peace, Environmental Safety, Natural Resources, Gender, Peace building, Education for Peace, International Law, Human Rights, Conflict Resolution, International Peace, Media, Responsible Management and Sustainable Development.

UPEACE, was inspired by the vision of Dr. Rodrigo Carazo Odio, former President of Costa Rica and created in 1980 by the UN General Assembly. Besides activities at its main campus in Costa Rica, UPEACE works with a growing number of partners in various parts of the world to ensure that its mission reaches as many people and institutions as possible. It has offices in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Geneva, Switzerland, New York, USA, and in Manila, Philippines. Currently, the headquarters in Costa Rica have more than 100 students from 44 different countries, being, globally, one of the most diverse universities for its size.

The Board, the highest governing body of the University is appointed by the Secretary General of the United Nations in consultation with the Director General of UNESCO and is comprised of 17 international members from different geographical areas, experts on issues of peace, safety, human rights and sustainability. Two American members were appointed, one from Brazil and Dr. Royo from Panama. The academic program is multicultural, multidisciplinary and dedicated primarily to develop skills for conflict resolution. The UN Secretary General is the Honorary President of the University.

Dr. Aristides Royo, a partner at Morgan & Morgan, LL.B. from the University of Salamanca, Spain and Juris Doctor from the University of Bologna, Italy, in addition to being a Panamanian intellectual and humanist, has been President of the Republic of Panama (1978-1982); Minister of Education (1973-1978); member of the Negotiating Committee of the Torrijos-Carter Treaties between Panama and the U.S.; Ambassador from the Republic of Panama to Spain, (1982-1984 / 1994-1996); Ambassador from the Republic of Panama to France, (1996-1999 ); and served as Panama’s Permanent Ambassador to the Organization of American States (OAS) (2004-2009).

El Dr. Aristides Royo, ex Presidente de la República de Panamá,  ha sido invitado por el Secretario General de la Organización de las Naciones Unidas, (ONU), BAN Ki-moon,  a ser miembro del Consejo Directivo de la Universidad para La Paz (UPAZ).   La  UPAZ  es una institución académica dependiente de la ONU y es el único instituto de esta organización autorizado para otorgar maestrías y doctorados.  http://www.upeace.org/espanol/acerca/ .     El Dr. Royo,  será el orador principal en la ceremonia de graduación de la promoción 2012-2013, el próximo 30 de mayo en la sede de la UPAZ en Costa Rica.  En dicha ceremonia, recibirán su título de Maestría 151 estudiantes provenientes de 44 países y cinco continentes.    Las especialidades de las Maestrías giran en torno a los más relevantes temas de  Gobernabilidad Humana, Paz,  Seguridad Ambiental, Recursos Naturales, Género, Construcción de la Paz, Educación para la Paz, Derecho Internacional, Derechos Humanos, Resolución de Conflictos, Paz Internacional, Medios de Comunicación, Gerencia Responsable y Desarrollo Sostenible.

La UPAZ,  fue inspirada en la visión del Dr. Rodrigo Carazo Odio, Ex Presidente de Costa Rica  y  creada en 1980 por la Asamblea General de la ONU.  Además de las actividades en su campus principal de Costa Rica, la UPAZ trabaja con un creciente número de asociados en varias partes del mundo para asegurar que su misión llegue a la mayor cantidad de personas e instituciones posibles.  Mantiene oficinas en  Adis Abeba, Etiopía;  Ginebra, Suiza;   Nueva York,  EUA;  y en  Manila, Filipinas.   Actualmente, la sede de Costa Rica tiene más de 100 estudiantes provenientes de 44 diferentes países, siendo una de las universidades más diversas a nivel global para su tamaño.

El Consejo Directivo,  máximo organismo rector de la Universidad es designado por el Secretario General de las Naciones Unidas en consulta con el Director General de UNESCO y está conformado  por 17 miembros internacionales provenientes de diversas áreas geográficas, expertos en temas de paz, seguridad, derechos humanos y sostenibilidad.  De América fueron designados dos miembros,  uno por Brasil y  el Dr. Royo por Panamá.  El programa académico es multicultural y multidisciplinario y está dedicado fundamentalmente a desarrollar habilidades para la resolución de conflictos.   El Secretario General de la ONU es el Presidente Honorario de la Universidad.

El Dr. Aristides Royo, socio del Grupo Morgan & Morgan,  LL.B. de la Universidad de Salamanca, España y Juris Doctor, de la Universidad de Bologna, Italia, además de intelectual y humanista panameño,  ha sido Ex Presidente de la República de Panamá (1978-1982), Ministro de Educación, (1973-1978);  Miembro de la Comisión Negociadora de los Tratados Torrijos-Carter entre Panamá y los EUA;  Embajador de la República de Panamá en España, (1982-1984 / 1994-1996); Embajador de la República de Panamá en Francia, (1996-1999), y fungió como Embajador Permanente de Panamá ante la Organización de Estados Americanos (OEA) (2004-2009).
